HISTORY

Zabki - previously Wola Zabkowska - there is a young town situated in the closest neighbourhood of Warsaw, because from the centre of Zabki to the Royal Castle in Warsaw it's only eight kilometres. In the 16th century a royal village called Wola Zabkowska was situated on the sandy and marshy ground on the edge of the Slupsk Forest. In 1580 the name Wola Zabkowska was changed into Zabki, which in that time was belonged to the Plater family. In 1635 Zabki got flooded after the river Vistula had burst its banks. However the settlement conditions improved in the 17th and 18th century thanks to the socio-economic changes in the Enlightenment and rapid development of Warsaw at that time. In the first part of 19th century the village owning to the count Roniker's family still has developed. During the years of the November Insurrection 1830-1831 many soldiers and their commanding officer gen. Chlopicki were stationed there and were made the foreground for the Olszynka Grochowska battle. In 1862 a railway line from Warsaw to Petersburg was opened and the development of communications caused a big inflow of people and there were convenient conditions to start the economic boom. In 1912 a part of this area was parcelled out according to the Prof. Tadeusz Tolwinski winning project, which followed the principles of a garden town, but unfortunately this urban project was realised only partly. After World War I the first wooden church was built and first parish was established. Moreover, the Drewnice Forest Inspectorate was set up and in the years between two World Wars brick building based on the local brickyard blossomed out. Some building have remained till today and they are considered as monuments of architecture, for example the residences, which were built for gen. W. Sikorski, gen. K. Sosnkowski, vice-president of Warsaw M. Jankowski and many other well-known person and politics of a period II Republic of Poland. The German occupation lasted from 14 September 1939 to 13 September 1944 and caused a lot of damages and the building of school and parish church, which were at that time built could not be finished. After the war Zabki started to rebuild and despite of suffering many losses has kept in developing of infrastructure and creating the cultural live. In 1956 Zabki gained the position of a housing estate and eleven years later it was granted the civic rights. For the recent years especially has been laid stress on the enlargement the town and apart from several blocks of flats has approached more and more detached houses. According to the Tolowinski's project of the town, which ought to have established, was planned as the place, where people live, work and surrounded by green plants and trees. The part of the town designed for recreation was to lie along a walking path planned with trees and in surrounding of the concert hall, cinema, restaurant and cafe. The design was unique because of urban dominants, perfect proportions and the concept of the street arrangement refers to classicist ideas and the central market place refers to the tradition of a small Polish town. In the years between the two wars the process of building the garden town had been continued, but unfortunately it was never fully realised. Although, the idea of a garden town the assumptions of Prof. Tolwinski's project was only partly completed, the existing remains are considered to be precious urban monuments. After the World War II Zabki was divided into parcels, what in some extension destroyed the urban arrangement of the town and caused changes in urban development project. The town is still distinguish by a lot of green terrain and beautiful surroundings, where are situated the detached houses. The localisation of the town, welldeveloped telecommunications and other facilities of a wellorganised town create perfect conditions for cooperation with the community on the business ground. The wide opportunities of investment in closest proximity of Warsaw and large number of still developing services - also commercial - there are further advantages, which should encourage potential partners to cooperate.
