Wołomin District
Welcome to the region of Norwid and the "Miracle on the Vistula River".

Wołomin
Wołomin Poviat is part of the vast Region of Mazovia. Despite the fact that it features a "simple and prosaic, even like sand earth", according to the words of Cyprian Kamil Norwid, it abounds in nature, history and culture.

The great Wołomin Plain is naturally diverse, show-casing forests, coppices and dunes and criss-crossed by lazily running rivers. In the past the area was covered by vast woodlands, which is proved today by the remains of the Słupecka, Kamieniecka, Jadowska and Sulejowska primeval forests of Mazovia as well as many ancient natural phenomena. The vicinity of Warsaw tied the history of this re-gion to history events, which were experienced by the capital of the Republic of Poland. The population of east central Mazovia had a significant influence on selection of elective kings, it participated in national uprisings, experienced effects of marches of enemy troops and foreign occupations. Numerous national commemoration sites from various periods of our history bear silent witness to the fights and martyrdom of Poles in this re-gion. In October 1794 in the area of Kobyłka the Kościuszko insurgents fought a fierce battle against a corps of the Russian army. 126 years later in the area of Radzymin the "Miracle on the Vistula" took place, when in the memorable year 1920 at the foreground of the capital the Bolshevik invasion was stopped, which wanted to take from Poland its newly regained independence and carry communist constraint to Europe. This event decided that the area was visited by the Holy Father - John Paul II. On August 13,1999 he met with the veterans of the Polish - Bolshevik war at the Cemetery of 1920 Polish Soldiers of Radzymin.

The people of the region had established unique traditions and customs. They were described by the Polish ethnographer Oskar Kolberg. who along with his friends from Warsaw's Bohemia crossed many times this part of Mazovia. Głuchy near Radzymin the great Polish poet, Cyprian Kamil Norwid spent his childhood and early youth years. He has been at many localities of our region. He used to visit his godfather, Ksawery Dybowski in nearby Dębinki, his great grandmother Hilaria Sobieska in Strachówka, count Andrzej Zamoyski's clothing manufacture of Jadów, a palace of Chrzęsne, Wólka Kozłowska, his relative Jan Sobieski of Klembów, where he frequently stopped at his friends - the sons of the lord of the manor named Kugler.
